Sunscreen depending on the SPF and ingredients minimise the amount of UVA and UVB rays that reach your skin.

What are UVB & UVA rays?

UVB rays are pretty harmful - they can cause sunburn and play a big part in many skin cancers.

UVA rays cause the type of skin damage that leads to a tan, but also premature ageing and wrinkles.

What about SPF?

A simple rule of thumb, the sunnier the day the higher the SPF that should be used.

A sun cream of SPF30 for example allows 3% of UVB rays to reach your skin, Whereas an SPF50 lowers this to 2%

How do I apply sunscreen?

During the summer months, sunscreen should be worn every day, even cloudy mornings, Always keep sunscreen handy to apply before you go out to the great outdoors.

Apply to the whole body, not just the exposed parts to give you all-round protection

How much should I apply?

Aim to apply around 2 tablespoons of sun cream per square centimetre of skin – or until you see a sheen.

When should I apply sunscreen?

Sunscreen should be applied half an hour before going out. Thereafter every 2 hours to keep up the protection.

The exception is exercise or swimming reapply as soon as you have dried off as water and sweat reduce effectiveness.

How long does sunscreen last?

If you follow our advice then you will use about one bottle a year.

The general life span is about 3 years unopened.

Does sunscreen stop you from tanning?

The bad news is yes, as sunscreen reduced the UVA from reaching your skin. The good news my next blog post will cover how to get a gorgeous glow with a fake tan.

Best time to enjoy the sun

Every second of a glorious sunny day, unfortunately, is not the correct answer, For healthy skin, you should avoid afternoons when the sun is at its hottest. If you are our then make sure you apply SPF50 every two hours and try to stay in the shade.

Soothe the burn

Sunburn can still happen, even when you’re super-careful. To keep your skin nourished and feeling healthy, always treat it to an after sun preferably one with soothing aloe vera.
